NEDSO Softball Guide: Rules & Equipment Standards

Whether you're a seasoned vet or new to the field, this guide will help keep our tournaments competitive, safe, and accessible for all.
Game Rules Overview

Game Format

Slowpitch softball, 7-inning games or time limit (determined per tournament)
-
No new inning may start after 55–60 minutes (unless otherwise stated)

Strike Zone
-
A flat strike mat is used behind home plate
-
A pitch landing on any part of the mat = strike
-
Must have legal arc (6–12 feet)

Batting & Lineups
-
Continuous batting allowed (all players bat in order)
-
Minimum of 10 players to start a game
-
If a team drops below 9 during the game, it may result in a forfeit unless approved by the commissioner

Home Run Rule
-
Limit per team per game (5 HRs, then outs)

Base Running
-
No lead-offs, no stealing
-
Must remain on base until ball is hit

Sliding
-
Sliding is allowed, but no malicious contact

Avoid collisions at home plate and second base

Mercy Rule
-
15 runs after 4 innings or 10 runs after 5 innings

Forfeit Policy
-
Game time = forfeit time

Teams must be ready 10 minutes before scheduled start

Protests & Rulings

All disputes must be brought to the commissioner during the game

The commissioner's decision is final
Equipment Guidelines

Bats
-
Must have USSSA
-
Senior or shaved bats are not allowed
-
Commissioner has final say on bat legality

Gloves
-
Standard softball gloves only
-
No foreign substances or tack

Cleats
-
Molded rubber or plastic cleats only
-
Metal cleats are NOT allowed

Uniforms
-
Teams should wear matching jerseys if possible

Players must wear a number for identification

Other Gear
-
Pitchers may wear a mask or helmet (optional but recommended)
-
No headphones, speakers, or earbuds during play
Accessibility & Deaf-Friendly Standards

Visual Cues
-
All umpires and scorekeepers will use clear ASL signals and hand gestures

Players should use hand signs or point when unsure

Communication on Field
-
Encourage ASL when possible
3
Respect On & Off the Field
-
No trash talk related to Deaf identity, speech, or communication style.
-
NEDSO is a Deaf-led league that welcomes Deaf players, CODAs, SODAs, and hearing allies.
